Explore the Outback with sids.ventures

For decades, Sid Hewison has been exploring some of Australia’s most striking landscapes, with much of his work rooted in the remote corners of Australia and for over 14 years, he’s guided travellers on multi-day camping expeditions through the outback—experiences designed not just to showcase dramatic scenery, but to help people understand the deeper layers of place. As a guide, storyteller, and documentary maker, Sid’s approach goes far beyond traditional tourism, focusing on the intersection of land, culture, history, and human experience.

When the tourism industry came to a halt during COVID-19 in 2020, Sid turned to video as a way to continue sharing these stories. What began as a creative outlet quickly resonated with a global audience, growing to more than 2 million followers and laying the foundation for sids.ventures. Today, his work exists both in the field and online, with each side feeding into the other.

Whether leading expeditions through the Kimberley or producing thoughtful digital content, Sid’s philosophy remains the same: slow down, pay attention, and experience places in a way that is grounded, respectful, and genuinely transformative.

Who Is Sid?

Sid isn’t your typical tour operator. He’s a guide, storyteller, and documentary maker whose work is built around one core idea: that the right experience in the right place can genuinely change a person. With more than two decades spent exploring landscapes, cultures, and the deeper patterns that connect people to place, Sid’s approach to travel goes far beyond surface-level sightseeing.

For the past 14 years, he’s been leading travellers through some of Australia’s most remote regions on multi-day camping expeditions. His tours aren’t about ticking off landmarks—they’re about slowing down, paying attention, and learning how to truly read the landscape.

The Story Behind sids.ventures

Like many in the travel industry, Sid’s world came to a sudden stop in 2020. After years of guiding in remote Australia, COVID-19 forced him to rethink everything.

Instead of stepping away, he picked up a camera.

What started as a way to stay connected, to nature, to storytelling, and to people stuck indoors around the world, quickly gained momentum. His videos, grounded in curiosity and a deep respect for the land, resonated with millions. By the time borders reopened, Sid had built a global audience of over 2 million followers.

That’s when sids.ventures truly began.

He rented a bus, launched his own tours, and created a model where content and real-world experiences feed into each other. Today, his tours fund his storytelling, and his storytelling fills his tours, creating a community that exists both online and out in the field.

Why the Northern Territory?

As he puts it, “Honestly, the NT chose me more than I chose it.”

That first experience of driving into the landscape left a lasting impression. “This wasn’t just a unique and remote location, this was a place operating on a completely different scale of time. Ancient in a way that’s hard to describe.”

The Northern Territory is often described as raw and untouched, but Sid sees it as something more immersive—“an open-air museum, stuck in timelessness, with the lifeblood of the oldest cultures and outback characters running through it.” It’s a place where geology, culture, and history aren’t separate elements—they exist together, layered across the landscape.

That connection is what keeps him coming back. “Once you’ve spent a few nights camped under those stars… you don’t really want to be anywhere else.”

Sid’s Favourite Place: The Outback

After years of guiding across Australia and travelling to more than 30 countries, Sid’s answer to his favourite destination is simple: “The outback. Without question.”

“Nothing comes close to central Australia for me. It’s home in the truest sense—the landscape, the people, the memories made out there.”

This is one of the oldest landscapes on Earth, where the rock formations predate complex life itself and the cultures connected to the land are among the oldest continuous cultures in human history.

Sid often speaks about the way the outback affects people. “The outback does something to you. It strips away the noise and reminds you what actually matters.”

Even after more than a decade of guiding in the region, that feeling hasn’t worn off. “After 14 years, it gets me every time.”

Where Do Sid’s Tours Take You?

Sid takes travellers across some of the most remote and remarkable regions of Australia, particularly throughout the Northern Territory and into the far north-west. His tours weave together iconic landmarks with lesser-known landscapes, each offering a different perspective on the scale, history, and raw beauty of the outback.

Here are just a few of the destinations featured across his journeys:

Uluru

One of Australia’s most recognisable natural landmarks, Uluru is far more than just a rock formation. It holds deep cultural significance to the Anangu people and stands as a powerful symbol of the country’s ancient history. Experiencing it in person—especially at sunrise or sunset—is something that stays with travellers long after they leave.

Rising 348 metres above the desert and measuring over 9 km around its base, Uluru reveals new details the closer you get—from ancient rock art sites to natural features shaped by time and story. The 10.6 km base walk offers a deeper way to experience its scale and significance, while guided walks provide insight into Anangu culture, Tjukurpa (traditional law), and the sacred stories connected to the land.

Kings Canyon

Known for its dramatic cliffs and the famous Rim Walk, Watarrka‘s Kings Canyon offers a completely different landscape to the surrounding desert. Towering sandstone walls, hidden waterholes, and sweeping views make it one of the most visually striking locations in Central Australia.

The 6 km Rim Walk is the main highlight, beginning with a steep climb often called “Heartbreak Hill” before opening up to incredible views across the canyon. Along the way, you’ll pass the lush Garden of Eden—a permanent waterhole surrounded by rare plant life—and the domed rock formations of the Lost City. It’s a challenging but rewarding walk, best tackled early in the morning to avoid the heat.

West MacDonnell Ranges

Stretching west of Alice Springs, this range is filled with rugged gorges, swimming holes, and ancient rock formations. It’s a place where you can hike through Standley Chasm, cool off in permanent waterholes, and experience the quieter side of the outback.

Highlights include Simpsons Gap, Ormiston Gorge, and Ellery Creek Big Hole—some of the best spots for swimming in Central Australia. Many of these waterholes are fed year-round, making them a refreshing stop after a hike, while the surrounding trails offer everything from short scenic walks to longer, more challenging treks through the ranges.

Alice Springs

Often considered the gateway to the Red Centre, Alice Springs is where many of Sid’s journeys begin. Surrounded by desert and mountain ranges, it’s a town with a strong connection to both outback culture and Indigenous heritage.

Set between the East and West MacDonnell Ranges, Alice Springs is home to key cultural sites like the Araluen Arts Centre and the Royal Flying Doctor Service. It’s also a practical launch point for outback adventures, with easy access to nearby gorges, walking trails, and iconic landmarks across Central Australia.

What Makes His Tours Different?

At the heart of sids.ventures is something simple but rare: authenticity.

As he explains, “I run them myself. That’s it, really. There’s no operation behind the curtain, no junior guide following a script—it’s me, and the people who book know that.”

Sid approaches each tour as a shared experience. “Every tour is a conversation, not a presentation. I’m not reading from a brochure. I’m sharing something I genuinely find extraordinary.” From the way he guides to the meals he prepares and the flow of each day, everything is intentionally hands-on and deeply considered.

That flexibility is part of what makes each trip unique. As Sid tells his groups, “There are only two variables on these tours—you and the weather.” It’s a simple idea, but it captures the essence of what he offers: an experience shaped not just by destination, but by the people on the journey and the environment around them.

Some of the most memorable moments aren’t planned—they’re felt. One of the biggest surprises for many travellers is the night sky. Away from any light pollution, the Milky Way reveals itself in a way most people have never seen before. Lying back on a swag and looking up, it becomes a moment that puts everything else into perspective.

Then there’s the silence. Removed from the constant background noise of everyday life, people often realise just how loud their world usually is. Out here, that noise disappears—replaced by stillness, space, and a sense of calm that’s hard to find anywhere else.

The travellers themselves are a big part of the experience. Rather than fitting a specific demographic, they’re connected by mindset—curious, open, and ready for something more meaningful than a standard tour.

Who Travels with Sid?

While most travel experiences define their audience by age, background, or nationality, Sid sees it differently. “Demographics are usually described in statistics… The people who come on my tours are linked in attitude more than anything else.”

From young travellers saving up for a once-in-a-lifetime experience to international visitors and even multi-generational families, the common thread isn’t where they’re from—it’s why they’re there. There’s a shared sense of curiosity, openness, and excitement that brings the group together before the journey even begins.

That connection is something Sid has noticed time and time again. “Tour groups usually take 2–3 days to bond. Mine take 20–30 minutes.” It’s a dynamic shaped in part by his online presence, where many travellers arrive already familiar with his approach and mindset. By the time they step on the bus, they’re not just meeting strangers—they’re stepping into an experience they already feel part of.

What You Take Away From the Experience

Sid’s tours are designed to leave a lasting impact. At the core of every journey is a simple but powerful goal: to help people see the world, and their place in it, a little differently. As he explains, it’s about creating “a slightly different relationship with where they live—not just Australia, the planet.”

Through time spent in remote landscapes and meaningful shared experiences, many travellers find themselves reconnecting with a sense of curiosity and presence that’s often lost in everyday life. People come alive and remember what it feels like to have that child-like joy of just being present—to experience a single day fully.”

For some, that shift is subtle. For others, it’s life-changing. It’s this transformation that sits at the heart of every sids.ventures experience—and what keeps people thinking about it long after they’ve returned home.

sids.ventures goes beyond simply visiting a destination—it’s about how you experience it. Through a combination of deep knowledge, raw landscapes, and genuine human connection, Sid has created something that sits well outside the boundaries of traditional travel.

Whether you’re following along online or stepping onto one of his tours, the intention is the same: to slow down, look closer, and reconnect—with the land, with others, and with your own sense of curiosity. In a world that often feels rushed and surface-level, that kind of experience is increasingly rare.

And for many who join him out there, it’s more than a trip. It’s something that stays with them long after they’ve left the outback behind.
