In the heart of Australia’s Red Centre is the Larapinta Trail. Stretching over 230 km along the spine of the West MacDonnell Ranges, the Larapinta Trails is a hiker’s dream and one of the best trail walks in the world. A journey through some of the world’s most breathtaking landscapes, this iconic trail is renowned for its rugged beauty, rich cultural heritage, and the sense of solitude it imparts to those who venture its path.
This article takes you along on my 15-day journey through the iconic Larapinta Trail, from day one of setting off on the trail to the breathtaking views atop Mount Sonder. Along the way, I’ll share the challenges, the awe-inspiring moments, and the impact this adventure had on me, offering a glimpse into why the Larapinta Trail is one of the NT’s best hikes.

An “End to End” Journey of the Larapinta Trail
From the red ochre cliffs and ancient gorges to the panoramic views from Mount Sonder, each step on the Larapinta is a testament to nature’s grandeur. The trail is not just a physical challenge but also a spiritual journey.
Whether you embark on the iconic “End to End” Larapinta adventure like I did, or simply sample some of its wondrous 12 sections, you will be left in awe of this majestic landscape that has been here for 300-450 million years.
The Adventure Begins
Starting on Day 1, I felt a sense of anticipation that I had never felt before. Walking through undulating carpets of green buffel grass brought to life by over 300 ml of rain to the region in recent months, Euro Ridge, the first of my Larapinta highlights, comes into view.
Not only did it provide remarkable views of the surrounding Alice Valley, but if this was day one, I knew the next 15 days would be incredible!!

Incredible Wonders
Over the following days, the terrain became more beautiful, passing iconic Larapinta spots such as Bond Gap, Hidden Valley & Brinkley Bluff. Known as one of the most spectacular and beautiful trails in Australia, Larapinta is also one of the hardest and longest.
For me, section three was the toughest; it was made up of deep gorges, exposed saddles and steep climbs. Descending into Standley Chasm in the late afternoon was extremely tough with its continuous rocky steps.
However, the massive quartzite ridges surrounding me and the views they provided made it all worthwhile.

In Awe of Sonder
With each day on the trail, Mt Sonder, or Rwetyepme (roo – choop – ma) to the local Arrernte Indigenous people, became more prominent in my daily landscape, and with that, a growing sense of pride and achievement.
I had walked nearly 230km, and the final sunrise ascent up Mt Sonder was nearby. Most hikers know it as the ‘icing on the cake’ of walking the Larapinta Trail.
Sunrise at Mt Sonder means starting the 8km steep uphill climb 3 hrs before first light, and for us, that was a 3:30 am start.

A Memorable Moment
Reaching the top as that first-morning glow breaks across the sky is something I have never experienced and seen before. It is an emotional and challenging adventure culminating in this moment.
The sunrise was breathtaking, with 360-degree views of the ancient land I had traversed over the past 15 days. But what was just as unique in those moments after sunrise was the “shadow in the sky”, a natural phenomenon of Mt Sonder’s shadow.
