When to Visit
Timing your visit can make all the difference when visiting the Northern Territory.
Dry Season (May to October):
The dry season is the most popular time to explore, with cooler temperatures and easier access to some of the more remote areas like Kakadu and Nitmiluk National Parks.
Wet Season (November to April):
You’ll need to prepare for high humidity and occasional storms in the wet season. But don’t let that deter you! The wet season brings the landscape to life with lush greenery, spectacular waterfalls in full flow, and fewer crowds.
After seven action-packed days, this Northern Territory itinerary wraps up with memories that last a lifetime — from your first swim beneath waterfalls to quiet moments on a short walk through ancient landscapes. A trip to Kakadu delivers unforgettable scenery and culture, especially when you allow time for a full day in Kakadu, visiting the visitor centre and learning about the region’s deep Indigenous history. Further south, stops in Mataranka bring pure relaxation, with a soak in Bitter Springs or the crystal-clear Katherine Hot Springs, while nearby Elsey National Park and the flowing Katherine River showcase the softer side of the outback. As you make your way back to Darwin, cruising past floodplains and finishing near Darwin Harbour, it’s easy to see why many travellers extend their journey beyond seven days — even pushing on to day 10. Whether you’re travelling with friends, family, or solo, this week Northern Territory road trip is the ultimate introduction to the Top End’s wild heart.
