AllClear: Best Travel Insurance for Medical Expenses

Unexpected medical emergencies are one of the most common — and costly — travel disruptions Australians face. From sudden illnesses to accidents or hospital stays, medical expenses overseas can quickly add up, often far exceeding what you’d expect to pay at home.

That’s why having comprehensive travel insurance with strong emergency medical cover is essential. It ensures you’re insured for unexpected costs and can access quality care when you need it most — whether you’re exploring overseas or enjoying domestic travel within Australia.

In this guide, we’ll unpack what to look for in travel insurance cover that protects your health and highlight one trusted travel insurance provider: AllClear Insurance Services, a specialist known for inclusive, flexible, and transparent policies.

Why Medical Cover Matters When You Travel

When you’re overseas or even in a remote part of Australia, a simple doctor visit can cost hundreds, while an emergency evacuation can reach tens of thousands of dollars.

Comprehensive travel insurance provides protection for situations like:

  • Hospital stays and surgery
  • Emergency transportation or evacuation
  • Specialist care or treatment overseas
  • Ongoing medical needs after an illness or accident
  • Emergency medical assistance 24/7

Without this protection, travellers could face significant financial stress at an already difficult time — especially those with pre-existing medical conditions.

What to Look for in a Good Travel Insurance Policy

Before you buy travel insurance, make sure you understand what’s covered — and what’s not. Here’s what to check:

  • Medical cover limit: Look for high or unlimited cover for hospital and emergency medical costs.
  • Emergency evacuation and repatriation: Essential if you can’t continue your trip due to illness or injury.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions: Some travel insurance companies exclude these or require medical assessments — always read the fine print.
24/7 emergency assistance: Ensure your insurance provider offers round-the-clock support.
  • Trip cancellation: Check whether cancellation due to illness, travel delays, or emergencies is included.
  • Luggage and personal items: Make sure your comprehensive cover includes lost, damaged, or stolen belongings.
  • Optional extras: Add-ons like cruise cover or adventure activities protection can be worthwhile depending on your plans.

Travel insurance for Australia and overseas trips: Confirm whether your policy applies to both international travel insurance and domestic travel insurance, depending on your itinerary.

Comparing Medical Travel Insurance Policies

No two travel insurance companies are the same, so it pays to compare carefully. Review cover limits, exclusions, trip policy details, and how each insurer handles pre-existing medical conditions.

Always disclose your medical history honestly — this ensures your policy remains valid if you ever need to make a claim.

When comparing, look at:

  • Trip type (single or annual policy)
  • Cover level (basic vs comprehensive)
  • Optional extras (cruise, adventure, luggage, etc.)
Trip cancellation and travel delays benefits

AllClear has no upper age limit so there is no worry about being ineligible for cover.

AllClear Trip-Type Options

AllClear Traveller Travel Insurance offers flexible trip options to suit your schedule and frequency of travel:

1. Single Trip Travel Insurance

Covers one defined trip or holiday. Ideal if you need travel insurance occasionally.

2. Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance

An annual policy that covers multiple trips within 12 months — perfect for frequent flyers or retirees who love to explore.

3. Specialist Options

Cruise Travel Insurance for voyages and Seniors Travel Insurance for older travellers who want extra reassurance.

Why this matters:

  • If you only take one holiday a year, a Single Trip policy is often more cost-effective.
  • For multiple getaways, an Annual Multi-Trip plan offers convenience — no need to take out separate policies each time.

Note: For annual plans, AllClear Insurance Services sets a certain number of days limits per trip.

Choosing the right insurance level depends on your travel style, medical history, and budget.

Heading to the NT? Here’s What You Need to Get Started

Travel Insurance

Whether you’re from Australia or across the globe, it’s a great idea to get insurance to cover unexpected accidents or medical emergencies. Cover More is our favourite travel insurance provider to give us the peace of mind while heading to the outback.

Flights

For the best deals on flights, we recommend using Trip.com. It’s super easy to compare prices across different airlines and booking sites. I always find great options for my trips, and it saves me so much time and money!

Hotels

We always recommend using Booking.com for hotels. They have a variety of accommodation options and great filters to help you find the perfect place for your trip to the NT. With amazing deals, a great loyalty program, and the largest selection of hotels and rentals, it’s our favourite place to book rooms.

Tours

Tours, either multi-day, half-day, or private excursions, are a great way to experience the NT. Viator has a great selection of activities to help you travel the Territory and learn from locals.

Car Rental

If you're looking to rent a car to explore the Territory on your own, we suggest checking out Budget. It’s so easy to compare prices and find the best option from their huge selection of cars. Or try Rentalcars.com to see cars from all rental companies in the NT.

National Parks Pass

If you live outside the NT and plan on visiting national parks, you'll need a Parks pass. Choose from a day pass, a 2-week pass, 12-month pass, or family pass at NT.gov.au. If you're an NT resident be sure you bring your NT driver licence or proof of residency. Note: Park Passes are not accepted at Kakadu or Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Parks. Purchase those from Parks Australia.

Sim Card

If you're travelling and need a reliable connection, We'd recommend getting an eSIM from Airalo. Choose from data only or cellular connection.  It’s super convenient and helps you stay connected without the hassle of swapping physical SIM cards or paying exorbitant fees to your wireless provider.
