Getting to Palm Valley Campground
The turn-off to Palm Valley is located on Larapinta Drive, approximately 1.5 km west of Hermannsburg. The 16km track follows along the Finke River (and at some points crosses the river), so access to the campground is limited to 4WD’s, and access to Palm Valley is by high clearance 4WD.
If there has been recent rain, you should check road conditions before setting off.
Fun fact: Did you know that the Finke River is reported to be one of the oldest rivers in the world!?
Our Adventure Begins!
Leaving Watarrka National Park, we took the Boggy Hole 4×4 track (also known as Finke River Track) that runs through the Finke Gorge National Park up to Larapinta Drive. Please note that the National Park advises against taking trailers on this track, which we were unaware of when we set off that day. Fortunately, we have a full off-road trailer that managed the trail, except for a blown tyre.
It was challenging in many places and not clearly marked, making navigation hard. The track is approximately 115km, and it took us close to 7 hours to complete. If you are an experienced 4WD driver and like adventure, we recommend leaving your trailer at the campground and concluding part of the track, and the beautiful landscape will blow you away!
Please note – As this is a remote track, be sure to research its current conditions and advise someone of your intended route and plans.

Palm Valley Campground
Surrounded by rugged red cliffs, the campground offers beautiful views no matter which way you look!
There are 22 allocated sites that need to be booked online. Make sure you book before heading to camp, as there is no reception. You can also pay for your NT park pass on the same website.
Facilities at camp include toilets, hot showers (such a treat when so remote), gas BBQs, picnic areas and communal fire pits. You must bring your firewood as it will not be collected within the National Park.
Things to Do at Palm Valley
There are various walks in the area.
Leaving from Palm Valley, there are two walks – Mpulungkinya – a grade 2/5km trail that takes you up and over the red cliffs and down through the valley, where you can get up close to the Red Cabbage Palms. These palms are only found in Palm Valley.
More Scenic Trails
Arankaia Walk – also a grade 2 trail, but only 2 km. The track mainly follows the valley floor.
Leaving the campground, there is the Kalarranga Lookout Walk 1.5kms which offers excellent views of the campground, or you can do the Mpaara Walk, which is 5kms. On the Mpaara walk, you learn about the local dreamtime story of the Tawny Frogmouth Man and the Pangkalanga Devil Man.
No matter what walk you choose, you will be rewarded with spectacular views of the area.
