History of Australia Day

Australia Day is observed each year on 26 January, marking the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet at Port Jackson in 1788 and the raising of the British flag. The date came to be known as Australia’s national day, though early observances were informal and varied across the colonies.

It wasn’t until the 20th century that 26 January became widely recognised as Australia Day, with all states and territories observing it on the same date by 1935, and the public holiday officially standardised nationally in 1994.

Controversy of the Holiday

Australia Day is also a complex and controversial holiday. While Australia Day is celebrated by many as a time of national pride and community spirit, 26 January is also a deeply significant and painful date for many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The day marks the beginning of British colonisation in 1788, which led to the dispossession of land, disruption of culture, and long-lasting impacts that Indigenous communities continue to experience today. For this reason, the date is often referred to as Invasion Day or a Day of Mourning.

As awareness has grown, the controversy around Australia Day has sparked ongoing national discussion about whether the date should change, and how the day should be observed. In places like Darwin and across the Northern Territory, many events now aim to balance celebration with reflection by including Welcome to Country, cultural ceremonies, and opportunities for education and dialogue. For some, the day is marked through community gatherings or service rather than celebration, reflecting the diverse perspectives that exist across Australia.
