What is Country to Couture?
Country to Couture is Australia’s largest showcase of Indigenous fashion and the nation’s premier platform for First Nations fashion innovation. Presented by the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair Foundation through Indigenous Fashion Projects, the event celebrates the creativity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander designers, artists and makers from across Australia.
Launched in 2016 as an intimate showcase of Indigenous textile art, Country to Couture has grown into one of Australia’s most anticipated cultural events. What began as a small presentation of First Nations textiles has evolved into a spectacular celebration of contemporary fashion design, featuring more than 120 collections, over 1,000 looks and more than 250 Indigenous models representing diverse language groups and communities.
Presented alongside the annual Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair, Country to Couture is much more than a traditional fashion event. Every collection celebrates connection to Country, culture and identity, transforming original textile design into wearable art. Through cultural storytelling, artistic expression and collaboration between artists and designers, the event continues to shape the future of fashion in Australia while providing a national platform for First Nations creatives.
When is Country to Couture?
For the first time, Country to Couture 2026 will take place across two nights, with shows scheduled for Sunday 2 and Monday 3 August 2026. The expanded format reflects the event’s continued growth and offers even more opportunities to experience Australia’s largest showcase of First Nations fashion.
Held during Darwin’s Dry Season, Country to Couture forms part of one of the city’s biggest cultural celebrations. The event is presented alongside the annual Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair, which celebrates its 20th Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair in 2026, and the renowned National Indigenous Fashion Awards. Together, these events create an unforgettable week celebrating Indigenous art, culture and design.
With warm days, mild evenings and a packed calendar of festivals, August 2026 is one of the best times to visit Darwin. Tickets are expected to be in high demand, so visitors should keep an eye on announcements from the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair Foundation and book early once sales are released.
Where is Country to Couture Held?
For Country to Couture 2026, the event is moving to an exciting new location. For the very first time, the Country to Couture runway will be held at Charles Darwin University’s new city campus, Danala, on Larrakia Country.
Set within the university’s Education and Community Precinct, the outdoor venue surrounds a striking heritage boab tree, creating a unique backdrop where nature and culture come together. With Country itself framing the runway shows, audiences can enjoy an immersive experience unlike any previous year.
Charles Darwin University is located close to Darwin’s CBD and is easily accessible by car, taxi or rideshare. Limited parking is available on and around campus, while public transport also services the area. As this is a new venue and one of the city’s most anticipated events, arriving early is recommended to allow time for parking, finding your seat and enjoying the atmosphere before the show begins.

Every year, Country to Couture delivers an unforgettable evening where culture, creativity and contemporary fashion come together on the runway. In 2026, visitors can look forward to an immersive outdoor experience set against the beautiful surrounds of Charles Darwin University’s Danala precinct on Larrakia Country.

Show One, Carried by Our Matriarchs – From Legacy We Rise, celebrates the strength of women, honouring the passing of knowledge, creativity and culture through generations. Show Two, Imprints and Memory – Seasons of the Land, Waters and Sky explores the enduring relationship between Country, nature and the changing seasons, celebrating the resilience and interconnectedness of First Nations communities.

The event also takes place alongside the renowned National Indigenous Fashion Awards and the 20th Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair, making it one of the biggest celebrations of Indigenous art and fashion in the country.

National Parks Pass
If you live outside the NT and plan on visiting national parks, you'll need a Parks pass. Choose from a day pass, a 2-week pass, 12-month pass, or family pass at NT.gov.au. If you're an NT resident be sure you bring your NT driver licence or proof of residency. Note: Park Passes are not accepted at Kakadu or Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Parks. Purchase those from Parks Australia.
