What is Territory About?

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably already watched Territory. However, if you’re one of the few who haven’t, here’s a quick synopsis:

“Territory” is a six-part Australian neo-Western drama series that premiered on Netflix on October 24, 2024. Set in the vast expanse of the Northern Territory, the show centres on the Lawson family and their cattle station, Marianne Station—the largest cattle station in the world, roughly the size of Belgium.

There’s contention surrounding the succession of the property at Marianne Station after the sudden death of Daniel Lawson, the heir to the station.

Is Marianne Station Real?

Marianne Station is a fictional location created for the show. Marianne Station was inspired by Anna Creek Station in South Australia, the largest operational cattle station in the world. In fact, Anna Creek Cattle Station is larger than the entire state of New Jersey!

However, filming took place at the massive Tipperary Station, which spans an astonishing 386,000 hectares. Tipperary Station is located just south of Litchfield National Park and is one of the world’s largest working cattle stations.

Real Places from the Netflix Series Territory

Territory topped the list of most-watched shows on the planet almost immediately after its release on Netflix in late 2024. It has become a glowing advertisement for the Northern Territory and celebrates not only the vast, harsh landscape of the Australian outback but also the sheer enormity of the waterfalls and escarpments of the Top End.

Here are some of the filming locations that you can see for yourself and take home your own memories of the true Territory.

Kakadu National Park

Kakadu National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site, provided several locations for the action-adventure shots in the show.

The park is famous for its diverse ecosystems, from wetlands and mangrove swamps to rugged escarpments, ancient rock formations, spectacular waterfalls like Jim Jim Falls and Twin Falls, as well as the vibrant Aboriginal rock art sites, some of which are over 20,000 years old.

A helicopter tour is a great way to see wildlife in the park, including saltwater crocodiles, kangaroos, and over 200 bird species. This 7-hour helicopter tour of Kakadu is the perfect way to experience the natural wonders of the park.

Tip: Take Precautions at Waterfalls

If you’re out hiking at Kakadu, the waterfalls look enticing for a mid-hike cool off. But it’s not a good idea to jump straight in. Learn to be Crocwise and check the signs along the way, to see if the area is safe for swimming. Best to admire the crocs from a distance, we say!

If you still want to swim, but would feel better with an experienced guide, a tour like this 3-day Darwin, Litchfield, and Kakadu trip lets you experience the best of nature without the stress for unknown dangers.

Or, if swimming isn’t your thing, join this guided day tour of Kakadu to experience all the highlights including a scenic flight and river cruise.  Locals recommend taking this tour for the best waterfalls in the NT.

Litchfield National Park

After a long day on the cattle station, two of the show’s characters, Susie and Lachie, enjoy a romantic escape from the heat in the cool, perpetually flowing waters at the idyllic Wangi Falls at Litchfield National Park.

The unspoiled Litchy is a short two-hour drive away, easily achievable in any vehicle. Litchfield offers an array of swimmable waterfalls, rockholes and cascades.

Wangi is a traditional sacred place for First Nations people that is open year-round. The Wet Season sometimes causes weather events or crocodile movements, which see the falls closed for a period, but that only makes the trip more exciting, plus the rangers are there to keep an eye on things and help you to stay safe.

Most of the hikes in the park are relatively easy and not far from the car parks, and you can take your pick from any of the harder walks if you’re feeling a little more adventurous.

You’ll get away with wearing flip-flops for the easier tracks, but you’ll want to take a decent hat—perhaps visit the local R.M.Williams and don one just like Emily Lawson’s.

Closer to the Capital

Travel 90 minutes north of Litchfield towards the Northern Territory capital of Darwin and visit some other Territory locations, including Berry Springs, Lee Point and Crab Claw Island Resort

Berry Springs

Berry Springs is notably a favourite swimming spot for Darwin locals and visitors alike, and we get several glimpses of it in Territory from above. A dip in its pleasant blue lagoon will leave you feeling like a VIP before you’ve even popped the cork on your champagne.

It had a very important purpose in keeping World War II troops cool and refreshed when over 10,000 service personnel were deployed to the area in the 1940s. Berry Springs swimming lagoon closes over the monsoon season, but you can take a dip once the rains finish and the Dry Season hits.

Lee Point

Lee Point, which featured as Nolan Brannock’s Laggan Downs property in the show, is home to a variety of shorebirds and migratory birds that travel thousands of kilometres to and from Asia every year.

There are over 200 species of bird sighted at Lee Point alone each year, which is massive considering there are 280 species in the whole of Kakadu. Its pristine beach is a perfect spot to watch the sun disappear into the Timor Sea, and if you’re feeling particularly daring, there’s a nudist beach just around the point!

Lee Point is an easy 20 minutes from the city centre, an easy drive to get out of the city for a bit.

Crab Claw Island Resort

Whilst not an island per se, Crab Claw Island Resort, which rests along Bynoe Harbour (a 90-minute drive or 20 minutes by air from Darwin), is a top spot for first-class fishing, boating and helicopter tours.

When the tide is high, the road is inaccessible for a few hours, transforming this coastal beauty into an island-type retreat. It provides the sunny backdrop for a secret meeting between Emily Lawson and Sandra Kirby in Territory.

What’s no secret, however, is the fact Crab Claw is a perfect place for a day trip or overnight stay, with cold drinks and a great menu to keep you satisfied.

Tipperary Station

As we mentioned above, the fictional Marianne Station was filmed primarily at Tipperary Station. This vast cattle station spreads out over 386,000 hectares, which serves as the backdrop for the show.

Tipperary Station offers overnight stays for those interested in experiencing the station firsthand, allowing visitors to tour the town centre, fish in the Daly River, and dine under the stars, immersing themselves in the unique Australian outback setting.

Experience Horse and Working Dog Training

If you’re not sure about visiting a working cattle station, this Outback Show in Katherine gives you a taste of the outback life and allows you to watch and learn as young horses and working dogs are trained for working life on the land.
