What is the Barunga Festival?

The Barunga Festival has a long history as a significant event on the national festival calendar, with roots dating back decades. The festival has a long history of showcasing Katherine and surrounding regions, including Arnhem Land, and continues to be a cornerstone territory festival.

Organised by the Bagala Aboriginal Corporation, the event is grounded in the traditions of the Jawoyn people. The Barunga Festival has a long-standing reputation for celebrating Indigenous music, sport, and art, while also being instrumental in promoting reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

It was here in 1988 that the historic Barunga Statement was presented to Prime Minister Bob Hawke, marking a pivotal moment in Australia’s history.
